Information Regarding Meltdown & Spectre Vulnerabilities

At SMB Suite customer security is always our top priority.  In an effort to keep you well informed:  an industry-wide, hardware-based security vulnerability was recently disclosed.  We are taking active steps to ensure that no SMB Suite Cloud customer is exposed to these vulnerabilities. At the time of this email, SMB Suite has not received any information to indicate that these vulnerabilities have been used to target SMB Suite Cloud customers.  Per Microsoft, the nature of these vulnerabilities will require updates to both hardware and software to mitigate the issues. 

SMB Suite has begun working with Microsoft and our other industry partners, including hardware OEMs and app vendors, to protect customers. To take advantage of all available protections, hardware/firmware and software updates are required. This may include microcode from device OEMs and in some cases updates to antivirus software as well.  With the public disclosure of the security vulnerability, we are accelerating the planned maintenance timing and will begin implementing vendor supplied updates and mitigation recommendations as soon as available.

We want to make sure you are aware of the full scope and nature of these vulnerabilities.  

Note: this issue will affect other systems such as Android, Chrome, iOS, MacOS, so we advise customers to seek out guidance from those vendors. In addition to SMB Suite managed services, you will need to identify your own affected systems and take appropriate measures within your organizations and at home.  Please consult with the vendor of your operating systems & computing devices for updates and instructions, as needed. For Windows customers, guidance has now been published and is available here

Happy 23rd Birthday, SMB Suite!

Microsoft's CEO Talks Business Solutions, REINVENTED

Two years ago, we set out with an ambition to reinvent productivity and business processes. In a world of infinite information and computing and finite attention and time, we aim to help everyone get more out of every moment and change the nature of digital work within organizations of all sizes.

We pursue this ambition in service of our customers’ digital transformations. Businesses of all sizes in every country will not just use digital technologies, but become digital companies themselves. Each company is attempting to digitally transform to achieve the same four outcomes – to engage customers, empower employees, optimize operations and transform products.

And let’s be clear – digital transformation won’t happen with another bolted-on cloud app or a giant implementation of monolithic and closed business application packages that take half a decade to customize and deploy, and another for employees to begrudgingly learn how to use.

Digital transformation requires systems of intelligence that are tailored to each industry, each company, each micro-task performed by each person. Systems that can learn, expand and evolve with agility as the world and business changes.

Last year, I made the decision to bring our Dynamics business into the mainstream engineering, marketing and sales teams. Last Thursday, we took a major step forward with the introduction of Microsoft Dynamics 365, to empower business users with built-in insights and intelligence within the business applications they’re working in – apps like field service, sales, finance, operations.

This has been a dream of the industry, but also for me personally since 2000 when Microsoft acquired Great Plains. When I led that group, we dreamt of doing things for our customers and partners that are now only possible because of widespread adoption of the cloud, proliferation of data, devices and sensors, and agile development environments.

Realizing this dream requires unlocking data stored in silos and monolithic suites of applications so customers can combine them to derive new insights, extend and modify their business processes quickly, and surface them in the communications and collaboration tools millions of people use at work every day. Therefore, it requires us to reinvent business processes taking both a people-centric and platform-centric approach.

Each system of intelligence needs to be centered around a person and encompass anything that the person needs to do in the context of their role. This means removing the impedances that exist between the business solutions people work across today; breaking down barriers between productivity, collaboration and business processes; and creating a new customer-centric business model aligned to the realities of these roles today.

Perhaps most importantly, systems of intelligence require a platform where any business or ISV can add unique value to a company’s digital transformation by extending and integrating its existing systems and business processes.

SMB Intelligence & Excel Reporting

Many of our clients come to us at the exact moment when the tools and solutions that were “good enough” in the past just aren’t cutting it any longer.  Our entire business model is designed around helping small and midsize organizations get the tools they need in an easy-to-use format.  The latest addition to our arsenal of solutions is SMB Intelligence.  In a nutshell, SMB Intelligence provides real-time reporting and dashboard functionality for your data in Microsoft Dynamics GP and Dynamics CRM entirely integrated into Microsoft Excel.
What follows are just the highlights of the reporting functions included in SMB Intelligence.  For a more detailed walkthrough that shows how to build a profit and loss statement, check out the video we made showing how to build a financial report in excel with SMB Intelligence .
I’m a big fan of SMB Suite’s ability to integrate with existing Office products like Outlook and Excel.  It makes sense to me that if you are already using Office in your work, you can dramatically reduce the time it takes to master a new tool if it functions just like the software you already know.  We’ve already got our entire CRM system integrated into Outlook, and our Financial Packages have deep excel integration in terms of real-time data exporting and excel sheet formatting.
But SMB Intelligence is different.  Using an Outlook-style interface in Excel, users can drag and drop to create complete financial statements or operational reports without ever having to manual key in a single formula. The result is professionally presented in Microsoft Excel or PDF, and users can refresh reports on-demand and drill down to detail thus eliminating the need to prepare and distribute report books. Reports are launched from either an intranet site, a web portal, from within your ERP system or locally from your PC as standard Microsoft Excel files. When launched, reports automatically connect to the database, so your data is always 100% real-time.
In other words, if your company is still creating reports in Microsoft Excel and manually pulling data from Quickbooks or another ERP solution you need to listen up:  can immediately begin building custom reports with real-time data all from a program you are already using on a weekly or daily basis (for some of us it’s hourly:).
Other highlights include:

  • Reports are available both as pre-defined templates or business users can design their own reports with the ease of drag-and-drop functionality in Excel.   • Tree builder allows users to create and maintain a centralized set of dimension trees, for example account hierarchies that will virtually eliminate manual maintenance of report definitions.
  • Drill-down to detail from any amount in any report to quickly find the underlying reason for variances and exceptions.
  • Produce ad-hoc reports in minutes with the easy to use Composer.
  • Complete web-portal provides users with an interface to run reports on any device, including mobile devices, from any location with an Internet connection.
  • Automatically generated narrative reports give users the story behind the numbers.
  • Product, customer and project profitability reporting with advanced allocation options.
  • Consolidations based on one or multiple ERP systems, and with unlimited roll-up hierarchies (trees).
  • Advanced currency conversion with unlimited rate types and automatic calculation of currency translation difference.
  • Automatic and manual eliminations
  • Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) compliant, including audit trial of adjustments.
  • IFRS to GAAP adjustments.
  • Automatic scheduling and distribution of reports
